Due to concerns over Covid-19 virus, we are taking precautions to help ensure the continuing health of our clients and staff
We are currently under level 2 restrictions. That means that we are open but there are precautions that we have to take. Please ensure that you are fully free of any flu or cold-like symptoms when arriving for your massage. We prefer not to have to turn anyone away at the door but we cannot massage anyone that is ill (partly because of the risk of Covid-19 and also because massage will probably make you feel worse that you already do). You may also be liable for the cost of the massage as per our cancellation policy (under the 'Stuff that has to be said' tab on this site).
Under level 2 restrictions, if you are 'high risk' (over 70 with existing conditions), you must stay home.
On arrival, please expect to answer a few questions before being allowed entry. Hand sanitiser is provided, and masks are available on request for you and the Massage Therapist. Other than that - please come and enjoy your massage!
Current update - from 02/06/2020
Our clinic is open for normal business, currently under Level 1. We welcome new and existing clients and would love to see you in our clinic. If you have any special needs or requirements, please feel free to discuss these with us. Looking forward to seeing you soon!
I want to thank all my clients and friends again for your continued support and patience as we continue to work our way through new processes and procedures.
With the Government having eased Covid precautions allowing more freedom to move and mingle, we feel that the risk is now low enough for us to resume business. There are still concerns however, so we have not made this decision lightly and continue to uphold the safety of clients and staff as a matter of crucial importance. Although we have extra cost and time involved in cleaning etc, we have resisted raising our prices. We will review this after three months operating under the new conditions.
We will open for business again as of 9am, Tuesday 02 June 2020. Our booking system is now open.
To facilitate this, we have protocols in place as recommended by the Ministry of Health and Massage New Zealand.This will include;
you will be required to answer a few questions prior to entering the building, and signing to the same once inside. We are unable to allow entry to anyone who is not fully healthy, or has any Covid concerns. These precautions are being applied to ourselves as well for your safety
all clients will be required to sanitise their hands on arrival. We will provide sanitiser in the clinic
staff will wash hands before and after each client as has always been normal practice
surfaces and objects will be continue to be disinfected as they were previously
masks are not required to be worn but will be available for clients and staff if desired
only disposable head cradle covers will be used and disposed of after each client as they have been previously
linen will be used only once then sent to a commercial cleaner as per normal
water will no longer be provided in the clinic but please feel free to bring your own. We recommend ample daily water intake for our clients
contract tracking is electronic and recorded through our booking system except where a chaperone or other (e.g. parent for minor) will be require to record their details manually in the clinic
We very much look forward to resuming business and seeing you.
Again I wish to thank you for your patience as we endure Covid-19 issues. We are now under Level 2 precautions nationwide and this means a large number of organisations and businesses have been able to reopen, with appropriate precautions in place. Covid-19 will unfortunately be with us forever and will mutate, as it is known to be doing already. NZ Massage Therapists are very concerned that we do the right thing to ensure the ongoing health of our clients - that we do nothing to risk the spread of this virus. A number of therapist that I know personally are not comfortable reopening under level 2, considering the close-up nature of our work and the potential risk this poses. I tend to share these views and prefer to wait the couple of weeks till we reach Level 1 to minimise the risk as much as possible.
It concerns me that a number of you are experiencing pain and discomfort. Rest assured I will reopen at the earliest possible date, once I am satisfied that I can do so safely with minimal risk to all. Those who had appointments cancelled when we closed down, and those who have contacted me with urgent concerns will have first options on bookings, and will be contacted by email once we have an opening date.
Keep an eye on this website and our Facebook page for an opening date.
Thank you for your patience at this difficult time. At this stage I am unsure if we will be able to open under Level 2. I am in contact with Massage NZ and other NZ therapists and we are monitoring Covid progress in NZ as well as overseas, where some therapists have been able to open. Of special interest are the precautions they are taking - the effectiveness of which is yet to be seen. Uppermost in our minds is the safety of our clients and we do not want to open too early or without proper (preferably tried and tested) safety precautions in place.
The Government is due to deliver the alert level change information on Monday 11th May. The decision may be that there is no decision, or that it will be delayed further. Even if able to resume, there’s a chance we may be restricted in what we can do.
During the PM's address to the nation today it is clear that we will not be able to reopen under alert level 3 restrictions. This is disappointing but necessary to ensure the safety of our clients and wider community. See the excerpt below from her address;
Question: When will businesses that involve close personal contact be allowed to open?
Answer: Right now, the risk of transmission from people providing services that require close personal contact (e.g. hairdressers, manicurists, beauticians, domestic cleaners, personal trainers, gymnasiums) is too great. These businesses can resume under Alert Level 2, with appropriate health measures in place
We are planning to reopen as soon as we are able. This will depend on the rules put in place once we move from the level 4 alert. Please continue to check back for updates and an opening date. It is possible that we may only be able to give a couple of days notice of re-opening. Thank you for your patience and continued support - we are very grateful.
Due to the level 3 alert, our clinic is closed until further notice
In addition to the points in the main body of this page;
With the alert level currently at 2 and people 70 years of age and over urged to isolate, reluctantly we can no longer take booking from this age group. We apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and understanding
We can no longer accept bookings from travellers, domestic or international
All clients on arrival at our clinic must immediately use the hand sanitiser provided
We will no longer offer water as we are used to doing, however we encourage our clients to continue effective self-hydration
We are expecting a move to alert level 3, at which point we will have no option but to close our doors
Presenting for massage with cold/flu (or potential Covid-19) symptoms is a contraindication to massage. Anyone presenting with cold or flu-like symptoms will be asked to go home (this is not new). Please be considerate and cancel your booking as soon as you become ill or suspect you may be becoming so (cancellations within 24-hours of the appointment incur a 50% cancellation fee).
Symptoms (from the Ministry of Health website 16/03/2020)
The symptoms of COVID-19 are:
a high temperature (at least 38°C)
shortness of breath
These symptoms do not necessarily mean you have COVID-19. The symptoms are similar to other illnesses that are much more common, such as cold and flu. Shortness of breath is a sign of possible pneumonia and requires immediate medical attention. We don’t yet know how long symptoms take to show after a person has been infected, but current World Health Organization assessments suggest that it is 2–10 days.
You must observe a 14-day probation period (i.e., do not book massage) if you have have:
been overseas (except to Ministry of Health Category 2 countries and territories)
been on a cruise ship
been in close proximity to or direct physical contact with anyone who is in quarantine (or self-isolation) for coronavirus
Anyone providing massage at Whitby Massage & Bodywork Clinic has always taken the following precautions for your safety, and these will continue;
1. hands are sanitised or washed before/after each client
2. all equipment is wiped down with a sanitiser after each client
3. all linen is used only once before being collected and commercially washed
4. a disposable face cradle cover is provided and disposed of after each client. The face cradle is sanitised between
5. all tumblers are washed in a dishwasher after one use
We very much appreciate your support of our business.
